Remote Bio-Organic Water Filtration Systems - AXF & FRPG
Overview
AXF Solutions, a UK technology developer and the Red Proyecto Gente Foundation (RPG) Foundation, a non-profit organization registered in Colombia, have developed and distributed water disinfection systems utilizing UV-C LED PearlAqua Micro™ units, to remote families in rainforests and Andean regions.
Innovation
Powered by both solar energy and mains electricity, these systems employ bio-organic filtration and UV-C LED technologies to effectively replace chlorine and provide off-grid communities with safe drinking water. This sustainable system positively impacts the health of communities and families in rural areas and reduces plastic waste associated with bottled water.
Each bio-filter is manually fed from the top of the big blue tank with harvested water from rain, local rivers or ponds. It circulates by gravity from the bottom to the top thru a mix of locally sourced sand and different kinds of gravel, and goes out via a pipe where the water passes through the pre-installed PearlAqua Micro™. The UV-C LED emits wavelengths from 200 nm – 280 nm that penetrate cells and damage the nucleic acid, rendering them microbiologically inactive before dispensing safe water that is ready for consumption.
Result
They are implemented on technology transfer programs, where communities learn the different local sources of water available to them, understand their quality, risks and benefits and how to care for it. Families are involved in the construction and maintenance of the bio-organic filter and can filter over 80 liters of safe-drinking water a day. This is a big improvement for individuals and communities who previously had no access or limited access to water prior to receiving this system.
These programs last over 6 months with each community, serving anywhere from 20 to 40 families depending on the needs. Households are in remote conditions and sometimes difficult to access. Systems are often transported using mules or farm animals to difficult to access areas.
