In Japanese culture, bathtime is a special time of the day, a chance to relax, have a soak, and let all your trouble float away. It is also customary for a family to use the same bathwater, rather than spending time running yourself an entirely new tub.
While it might be a great way to save on your water bill, there are a few challenges that come with this traditional bathtime custom.
In order to keep the water warm between uses, most households are fitted with a hot water supply system which is used to reheat the bathwater for each person – so the last person in doesn’t have to deal with lukewarm bathwater, yuck!
However, in Japanese culture, children have their baths a lot earlier than their parents meaning that the bathwater is left to sit for long periods of time being heated and then allowed to cool, before being heated again and so on and so forth.
So while the hot water supply system is ensuring everyone gets their perfect bath, it is also creating the perfect conditions for bacteria to grow.
Mitsubishi Electric recently updated the design of their CO2 heat-pump hot water supply system. This product produces hot water for home use from the heat of the air with a small amount of electrical energy.
After identifying the problem, Mitsubishi Electric needed to prevent bacteria from multiplying between each bath use and turned to Aquisense Technologies to come up with a solution:
Create a heat pump that can maintain disinfection during each bath and provide safe water for families with a solution that has a long lifetime.
How Aquisense Technologies helped
Aquisense Technologies took a look at Mitsubishi Electric’s new CO2 heat-pump hot water supply system to see how we could apply our UV-C LED systems.
Using our PearlAqua Micro™, which uses our advanced UV-C LEDs which are able to effectively and efficiently reduce the growth of bacteria, we fitted it to Mitsubishi Electric’s new CO2 heat-pump hot water supply.
As the water was recirculated through the system, it was exposed to the PearlAqua Micro™ multiple times. As the water passed through the PearlAqua Micro™ it was exposed to a UV-C LED which is able to make any bacteria present in the water inactive.

Mitsubishi Electric identified Aquisense Technologies for this solution as we are the leaders in UV-C LED module manufacturing. Working with Mitsubishi Electric, we were able to design a UV-C module that could be fitted to their new CO2 heat-pump hot water supply system.
As a result, Mitsubishi Electric’s new system was able to meet the needs of their customers by supplying them with a heat-pump that not only was able to keep bath water warm for long periods of time and after multiple uses but was also able to stop the formation and multiplication of bacteria in that bathwater that could be harmful.
By recirculating the bathwater and exposing it to the PearlAqua Micro™ UV-C LEDs multiple times, we were able to solve the Mitsubishi Electric challenge by making their system safer for its users.
